When I saw the difference in ratio from new to used price comparing a used Leaf and a used Tesla I figured Tesla was somehow boosting their used market. But I didn’t realize they were actually guaranteeing the price. When this sort of false market is established and the real market takes over, prices tend to crash and crash hard. The article below says they ended the program July 1st. I’m guessing by the end of July we’ll have some clear results.

Medium mileage Leaf’s are going for about $10k. How much will a 50k mile Tesla sell for at the end of the month?

I don’t mean to hate on the Model S, but it has two huge problems:

1. Electric cars right now are inherently cursed, in that they quickly become obsolete due to the pace that their underlying tech is evolving (i.e. a big part of why used Leafs are so cheap).

2. The Model S’ conventionally-powered competitors are all better at being actual luxury cars, when all’s said and done.

Now, we didn’t see the effect of any of this b/c their values were held artificially by the guarantee program in the article. With it gone, we’ll see used market values correct to reflect my two points above.

Perhaps the end of this month is too soon, but certainly by this time next year, I’d predict no Model S will be more expensive than the equivalent Audi A7.

ebay Audi A7, 51k miles, buyitnow $39,500

I’m betting by the end of the month you can get a Tesla with 50k miles for less than that.

IMHO used Model S’s will be widely available in the $35-40k range before the year is out.
